Understanding Your Fluoride(s)

Fluoride, you drink it every day in Sydney tap water, you brush your teeth with it (if using conventional toothpaste), and your body absorbs it every time you take a shower or bath. Why are the three different synthetic types of fluoride and the one naturally occurring fluoride all labelled with the same name, pretty confusing right? When things get confusing it's easier to ignore them.

It's definitely important to understand the difference between each fluoride and where they come from.

Synthetic fluoride:

1. fluorosilicic acid - waste product from the phosphate fertiliser industry
2. sodium fluorosilicate - waste product from the phosphate fertiliser industry
3. sodium fluoride - waste product from the aluminium industry

Naturally occurring fluoride:

1. calcium fluoride - naturally occurring in water, fruit, vegetables
(AND NOT THE FLUORIDE THAT THEY ADD TO OUR DRINKING WATER)
